Plot Summary
The fourth season of Game of Thrones covers the last half of the third novel, A Storm of Swords, as well as portions of the fourth and fifth novels, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons. The story takes place in a fictional world, primarily on the continent of Westeros, where several noble families vie for the Iron Throne, the seat of power in the Seven Kingdoms. The season also follows the adventures of Daenerys Targaryen, a Westerosi exile who seeks to reclaim her throne with her dragons and army of freed slaves, on the continent of Essos.
The season begins with the aftermath of the Red Wedding, where Robb Stark, his mother Catelyn, and most of their bannermen were massacred by the Freys and Boltons, allies of the Lannisters. The remaining Starks are scattered across Westeros and beyond: Sansa is a hostage in King's Landing, married to Tyrion Lannister; Arya is on the run with Sandor "The Hound" Clegane; Bran is traveling north beyond the Wall with his companions; and Rickon is hiding with Osha and Shaggydog. Jon Snow returns to Castle Black after escaping from the wildlings, who are preparing to attack the Wall with their leader Mance Rayder. Meanwhile, Stannis Baratheon regroups at Dragonstone with his adviser Melisandre and his loyal knight Davos Seaworth.
The season also features several new characters and locations: Oberyn Martell, a prince of Dorne who comes to King's Landing to seek revenge for his sister's death; Ellaria Sand, his lover and paramour; Mace Tyrell, the father of Margaery Tyrell and a powerful lord; Olenna Tyrell, his mother and a cunning matriarch; Tommen Baratheon, Joffrey's younger brother and heir to the throne; Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane, a brutal knight and Cersei's champion; Qyburn, a former maester and a mad scientist; The Three-Eyed Raven, a mysterious figure who guides Bran's visions; The Children of the Forest, an ancient race of magical beings who live beyond the Wall; Hizdahr zo Loraq, a nobleman from Meereen who becomes Daenerys' suitor; Daario Naharis, a sellsword who joins Daenerys' service; and The Night King, the leader of the White Walkers.
